October Meeting Speaker – Christof Heisser – MAGMA Foundry Technologies |
|
For the October meeting, the AFS Toledo Chapter welcomed Christof Heisser of MAGMA Foundry Technologies. Christof, the Vice President of MAGMA Engineering Services in North America, gave a presentation entitled, "Casting Solidification – Going Far Beyond Modeling". Christof started his presentation by outlining a cast metals historical timeline and highlighting some of the technological breakthroughs and innovations that have helped the industry grow into the industry that it is today. This reminder of where the cast metals industry has been helped lay the ground work for his primary topic which was computer aided solidification modeling. Christof gave many examples showing how this computer aided modeling can benefit a foundry operation. One example was the use of solidification software to optimize the design of runner/gating systems and risers in order to reduce tooling re-work costs and the scrap associated with the trial and error method of optimizing a design. Another example of how this technology can benefit a foundry is the ability to push the envelope in casting design by being better able to predict the metallurgical properties throughout all parts of a casting and using this information to enhance the value of a casting. The AFS Toledo Chapter would like to thank Christof for his presentation on this unique and interesting technology. |
