January 2003 Meeting
|
The January American Foundry Society – Toledo Chapter meeting was
held at Sam B’s in Bowling Green, Ohio. Our guest speaker for the
evening was Gary Mosher who is the AFS Vice President of safety and
environmental affairs. Mr. Mosher’s topic for the night focused on
updating the AFS Toledo Chapter on the EPA’s push to implement the new
"Maximum Achievable Control Technology" (MACT) standards.
These new standards pose a potentially serious threat to our industry
by making the price of doing business even higher. If passed, a few of the
requirements of these new standards would be as follows:
Particulate Matter for existing melting
furnaces – 0.005 grains/dry standard cubic foot.
Particulate Matter for new melting furnaces
– 0.001 grains/dry standard cubic foot.
Afterburner emission limit – 200ppmv for
carbon monoxide.
TEA gas emission limit – 1ppm
The final decision for the iron and steel
MACT is scheduled for the August 2003 time frame.
